"Fake Antivirus" - Removal Tool Now Available
We have received the following email from Protector Plus Anti-Virus concerning fake antivirus software. They have provided links to their available removals tools to assist Internet users with removing this unwanted software.
Please keep in mind, the links on this page, and our page, are for third-party applications and are to be used at your own risk. Should you encounter problems with the tools, you may need to consult a computer technician for further assistance.
Protector Plus patrons,
We are writing from Proland Software's virus analysis division. This communication is to educate the user community about recent threats that are posing as Antivirus software to mislead the users.
Infection method:
We are receiving various reports about discovery of these fake antivirus software. Majorly these threats are distributed by sending fake security alerts thereby enticing the users to download and install the fake scanner. Once it is installed it displays messages about "various types of threats found on your computer, which can be removed only on purchasing their software".
Following are some of the names using which fake Antivirus software is circulated:
Antivirus 2008 for XP
Antivirus 2009 for XP
Antivirus XP 2008
XP Antivirus 2008
XP Antivirus 2009
XPAntiVirus XP
AntiSpyware 2009
System Antivirus 2008
System Antivirus 2009
How to avoid?
a. Be cautious while opening any email containing any of the text mentioned above.
b. Do not click on any email attachment until and unless the origin is verified.
c. Always keep your security software updated to combat new threats.
d. Always practice safe computing.
